Copper’s Corner: Copper Knocks Over A Plant

I wake up late on Friday morning, March 30th, my mother’s birthday. We’re going out tonight to a great Italian restaurant on the Upper West Side to celebrate. It’ll be me, my mom and my older brother Dave. I’m looking forward to it.

I go into the kitchen and make myself a sandwich.  Ham and turkey with American cheese on a bagel, with light mayonnaise and tomato. Pretty classic stuff, and it really hits the spot.

I make my way into the living room and, whoa, what have we here? The medium-sized plant on the windowsill by the TV has been knocked off the windowsill.  It’s lying on the ground, and there’s dirt everywhere, and the plant is ripped out from its roots and lying on the ground too. What the heck happened?

But then I remember, the same thing happened to my bonsai plant a couple months ago. Since the only other occupant of my apartment is my cat Copper, it must have been her. I’m slightly annoyed, but I’m not too mad because I know she didn’t mean to do it.

Just as I start to get some paper towels to clean it up, Copper walks into the living room and gives me a strange look.  I think I detect a little bit of guilt to in her eyes. She’s like, hey, what happened over there dude? Did the plant fall down? What happened big guy? Her eyes seem to be saying it wasn’t me, I didn’t knock the plant down.  Or maybe it was, who knows dude? That’s what her look says.

I look at her and say Copper, did you do this, Copper did you do this Copper? She looks right back at me with wide eyes, like she’s a little surprised that I’m questioning her. Her look turns into an expression that seems to say “don’t worry about it, just clean it up dude, don’t worry about it.”  Then she walks out of the room. She just walks back into the bedroom.

So what do I do? I clean it up, that’s what I do.  I clean up all the dirt on the floor. I get some wet paper towels and wipe it up off the ground, and I wipe up the side of the windowsill. Then I put the plant back in its spot. I hope that it can regrow or be reborn.

This is the second time Copper has knocked down plants in my apartment.  She knocked down the two plants in the kitchen before, including the bonsai tree, and now she’s knocked down one of the two living room plans. She’s really on a roll, lol.

The thing is, it’s kind of funny.  I really just can’t be that angry at her, because I love her so much. I mean before I had Copper, I had the plants, and they were the only living beings in the apartment, so I really cared about them. But once I adopted Copper and brought her home, the plants became less important.  So even though I do still care about them, Copper is my number one priority. So if she knocks over a plant, so be it, I’ll try and rescue the plant, and then I’ll move on.

I finish cleaning it up, and I go into the kitchen to get some water. Copper is back in the bedroom, I think, but I’m not sure. All I know is that in the middle of the night she must have had something happening in her mind or her heart her soul that told her to jump onto the window sill and mess with the plant or play with it and knock it over.  Or maybe somehow she accidentally knocked it over.

Either way, it got knocked over, I cleaned it up, and it’s time to move on. Thank you for the excitement Copper, please keep enjoying yourself in our home. We’ll see what happens next.
